Sodium hexametaphosphate is an inorganic substance with molecular formula (NaPO3) 6. It is a white powder crystal, or a colorless transparent glass sheet or block solid. Soluble in water, insoluble in organic solvents. It has strong hygroscopicity. When exposed to the air, it can gradually absorb water and form a mucilage. It can form soluble complexes with calcium, magnesium and other metal ions. It is widely used in food and industrial fields.

1. SHMP is employed in water treatment processes as a sequestering agent. It binds to metal ions in water, preventing their adverse effects on water quality, such as scale formation and corrosion in pipes and equipment.
2. In detergents and cleaning agents, SHMP acts as a water softener and dispersant. It prevents mineral deposits in washing machines and improves the effectiveness of detergents.
3. In the oil and gas industry, SHMP serves as a dispersant and fluid loss reducer in drilling muds. It helps control viscosity and prevents unwanted sedimentation during drilling operations.
